Less Expensive SHTF Water Filter
I'm still trying to decide between the Black Berkey filter elements (~$99 on Fleabay & elsewhere), and a much less expensive filter I just found on the web today. The less expensive one is the "Just Water" ceramic drip filter, promising 1 gal/hr (once the filter is saturated).
If you're starting with reasonably clean water (not full of oil/chloroform/chemical goo), the less expensive filter may be a reasonable alternative to the Berkey. See: http://www.thefrugalzone.com/useful-...-water-filter/ http://shop.monolithic.com/products/...ic-drip-filter http://static.monolithic.com/edcircl...ter/index.html (the last link includes a link to an email from Johns Hopkins re: filtration testing of the filter vs Berkey) The price looks very attractive - $22.50 for ceramic element, prefiltration "sock", and plastic spigot. Shipping for 1-2 systems to my location is $13, but $36 is still a good bit less than $99. If nothing else, it may be a nice filter in addition to a Berkey/Aqua Rain system. |
